The Pass Plus Scheme
Pass plus scheme is a government backed scheme designed by the DSA for newly qualified drivers of all ages. Its primary aim is to develop the attitudes and skills that are essential for safe driving for life. Statistics show that new drivers make up just 10% of licence holders but are involved in 29% of all accidents. The Pass Plus is a structured training course delivered locally by your ADI which aims to improve on that statistic. It is a voluntary scheme supported by the insurance industry and taking part results in a cheaper car insurance for you. Normally by giving you the equivalent of one years no claim bonus.
With Pass Plus there is no exam at the end. Your examiner will sign a certificate to say that you have completed that part satisfactorily. There are six parts, or modules, covering different aspects of driving. On completion of each module your ADI will sign the certificate to say that you have reached an acceptable standard. Normally each part will be covered in an hour, but if you have not reached a satisfactory level by the end of that hour, then it may be necessary to spend more time on that subject before the certificate can be signed.
Fees for the Pass Plus course will vary depending on where you live and the driving instructor or driving school you choose. By choosing to take part in this scheme, you will have shown that you want to be a skilful and safe driver.
The modules include:
- Town Driving
- All Weather Driving
- Out of Town and Rural Roads
- Night Driving
- Dual Carriageway Driving
- Motorway Driving
Motor insurers that support the scheme will give you a one year's no claims bonus for comprehensive third party fire and theft policies, and third party policies as soon as you insure your own car. The saving could more than cover the cost of extra lessons.
You can defer the no-claims bonus for two years if you currently drive under someone else's policy. This means that if you buy a car within two years of completing a Pass Plus course, and have not had any claims in the meantime, your first premium will be reduced by the extra one year's no claim bonus.
Insurers representing over 63% of the UK private car market have agreed to these discounts.
The companies are:
- Admiral Ecclesiastical
- CGU Guardian
- Churchill Highway Motor Policies at Lloyd's
- Co-operative Ins Norwich Union
- Cornish Mutual Pearl
- Diamond Privilege
- Direct Line Provident Insurance
- Eagle Star Royal & Sun Alliance
