In this show;

we go back to the ADINJC conference that was held on the 4th of October and listen to a talk given by Kate Trafford and find out how to increase the chances of getting our nervous pupils through their tests. Kate describes herself as a personal development trainer and success coach and uses Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

Taken from the handout given at the conference...

From Stress to Success in 3 Easy Steps

Presented by KATE TRAFFORD

Imagine being able to share with your students the three key "switches" that flick
us between our "fight or flight" stress response and the "relaxation response".
Who, amongst your clients, would benefit from conditioning themselves to switch
easily between these two modes, paving the way for feeling calm and positive in a
far wider range of situations including driving lessons / tests?
And how delighted will they be when they discover that they can also use these skills to
recover quickly when things don't go according to plan?!

Step 1: Breathing
o Lengthen your exhale.
o 1:2 (or greater) ratio of inhalezexhale
o Attention to air in nostrils to relax diaphragm

Step 2: Peripheral Vision
o Focus on a spot / flickering flame / favourite image / symbol
o Expand awareness out- seeing out of corners of eyes
o Allow eyes to close
o Visualise the "tangerine", 6-12 inches from back of head

Step 3: Auditory Cue - "I am..."
o ldeally begin speaking aloud, then allow to go "internal"
o Speak slowly, allowing the "mmmmm" to resonate
o Affirmation sequence ("l am relaxing", "l am peaceful", "I am safe", "l am aware", "l am ready for my test" etc)
o Reduce to "l am"
o Reduce to "l"
o Release auditory cue and experience the silent Observer behind the "I"

Consistency is the key to benefiting fully from this process. Just 5 minutes a day of
practice can have profound beneficial effects. If you can practice more frequently
even better. And extended sessions of around 20 minutes is a blissful experience
of going even more deeply... into being... all of who you are!
